VOIP and Internet phone service providers

Internet phones are based on a relatively new technology that enables users to makes phone calls over the internet. Internet phone service providers usually have a range of services and payment plans to avail of this technology.

Internet phones convert an analogue sound signal into a digital signal, which is then carried over the internet to the recipient. The signal is converted once more, depending on whether the recipient is using a regular telephone or a VOIP Phone.

Some internet phone service provider only allow calls from computer to computer, but most also allow calls between regular phones and VOIP Phones as well. Calls can be made directly from the user’s computer, or a special VOIP (internet) Phone handset, and sometimes regular telephone handsets can be connected to an adaptor and made VOIP enabled.

The VOIP technology is fast becoming more and more popular as it replaces the need for having both a telephone line and an internet connection, by combining the two. The downside is that many internet phone services do not have all the benefits of a regular phone. For example, 0800 numbers might not be free from internet phones. But most of these facilities are actively being integrated into the service.

Internet phone service providers usually offer very competitive prices, and with most other benefits of telephones now becoming available on internet phones services, it is hard not to get tempted.
